Foundation Type by Division

A graph showing different regions of the United States and the percentages of houses with foundation types, including basements, crawl space, and slab.

The graph shows foundation types for “New Single-family Homes Started in 2013.” It can be seen that the northern states in the U.S. highly prefer basements to any other type. Moving south and lower in elevation, people prefer slabs, especially in the southern, land-locked states. Usually Crawl spaces only account for 5 or 10 percent of the foundation types used per region, except for the East South Central and the Pacific, which used it 35% and 40% of the time, respectively.
